Protests against Vat on tuition fees contginue

Students of various private universities brought out processions and staged demonstrations in different parts of the country, including Dhaka, Savar, Sylhet and Chittagong, on Saturday as part of their ongoing movement against the imposition of 7.5 percent VAT on tuition fees.
In Dhaka, Students of Daffodil University brought out a possession on Mirpur Road in front of the main gate of the university around 11:00am.
Around 12:30pm, a procession was brought out by students of State University from in front of the university near Kalabagan Bus Stand which paraded different streets and terminated on the university’s main campus at Dhanmondi.Similarly, World University students brought out a procession from Asad Gate chanting slogans against the VAT.
In Savar, several hundred students of Gono University put up blockade on Dhaka-Aricha highway at noon. The students took position in front of the university around 12 pm and blocked the highway, halting traffic for 15 minutes.
Several hundreds vehicles remained stranded on the highway during their demonstrations. Vehicular movement on the highway returned to normalcy after police intervention.
In Chittagong, students of BGC Trust Medical College here on Saturday staged demonstrations on Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar Highway at Rowshanhat in Chandanaish upazila.
The demonstration started around 11am. Later, police rushed in and took the situation under control, said Officer-in-charge of Chandanaish Police Station Abul Kashem Bhuyan.
In Sylhet, students of different private universities took position in front of Shahid Minar of Chouhatta area in the city around 11pm.
Private university students’ have been on a movement since Wednesday protesting against the VAT imposition.
Amid the students’ protest, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) on Thursday said it is the private university authorities, not the students, will pay the VAT.
Earlier on July 4, the NBR issued a notification imposing 7.5 percent VAT (Valued added tax) on the tuition fees of the private universities and medical colleges.- UNB
