Quit or face mass upsurge: Jamaat to govt

0

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Tuesday demanded the government quit by October 24 to avert a mass upsurge.   “Step down by October 24 restoring the caretaker government system. Or else, people will wage a vigorous movement demanding your (govt) resignation. This movement will turn into a mass upsurge,” said Jamaat acting secretary general Rafiqul Islam Khan.   In a statement, he also demanded the government dissolve the “controversial” International Crimes Tribunals and release the detained Jamaat leaders.   The party, however, refrained from making any comment about capital punishment against BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury given by the ICT-1.   The tribunals have so far convicted six Jamaat leaders on charges of crimes against humanity committed during the 1971 Liberation War.   The Islamist party gave strong reactions and took to the streets after every verdict against its leaders though BNP was silent.   The opposition BNP has also preferred to remain silent on the verdict of International Crimes Tribunal-1 against its standing committee member Salauddin Quader Chowdhury. – UNB
