Rab report finds 20 of its men involved in N’ganj murders

The internal probe by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has blamed three of its former officers for the murder of seven people in Narayanganj, including City Corporation Councillor Nazrul Islam and senior lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarkar.
Rab unit submitted its report to the High Court on Wednesday, almost eight months after the killing in April this year.
It found ex-army officers former Lt Col Tarek Sayeed Mohammad and ex-Maj Arif Hossain and ex-navy officer former Lt Commander MM Rana responsible for the murders. The trio were then deputed to the force’s Narayanganj base.Of them, Tarek Sayeed is the son-in-law of Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam told journalists that the report stated that Tarek Sayeed and Arif Hossain were involved in the total process, starting from the abduction to dumping of the bodies in Shitalakkhya River. Rana was partially involved as he only took part in whisking away the seven, he added.
The RAB report has also named 18 other persons, all of them deputed to Narayanganj RAB-11, involved in the killings.
Describing the report as an ‘internal’ one, Alam said this inquiry would be not considered for trial. The court will consider the chargesheet submitted by the police’s Detective Branch (DB).
“The High Court ordered the RAB said to address the issues whether the force’s members were involved and whether there was any negligence to rescue the abducted,” said the attorney general.
Asked whether the RAB headquarters were informed about the incident, Alam replied: “That will be known after the full report is read.
“I have said RAB is not the investigating agency. This report only states those names who were initially found involved. A trial can not be held based on this. It will have to be on the report by the DB.”
The 7-murders that included the killing of an elected councillor of Narayanganj city corporation had shaken people’s trust in the Rab, as three of its men were implicated in those. The victims abducted in broad day light were killed and thrown into the Sitalakhya river by tieing the bodies with bricks. Four days after the killings the bodies were found floating in the river.
The family of the slain councillor, Nazrul Islam, has been complaining from day one that the murders were committed in exchange of money – News Desk
