Rab rescues six fishermen after gunfight with robbers

Dhaka – Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) rescued six kidnapped fishermen following a gunfight with forest robbers in the Sundarbans under Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira district on Friday, UNB news agency reported.
The Rab force also recovered four firearms and 55 bullets after the gun battle that took place during a special drive in the deep forest of the West Sundarbans.Deputy commanding offer of Rab-8 in Barisal Major Adnan Kabir said they launched the drive in the Sundarbans on Wednesday night as forest robbers kidnapped 50 fishermen from different areas in the last two weeks for ransom.
The robbers also looted fish and boats apart from kidnapping the fishermen, he said.
Tipped off that members of ‘Jonab Bahini’ were staying near Chhota Kalagachhia River in the deep under Satkhira range, a team of Rab-8 conducted a drive there around 6 pm, he said.
Sensing the presence of the elite force members, the gangsters opened fire on them, forcing the Rab members to retaliate that triggered a gunfight around 6:45pm, Adnan said.
At one stage, the hoodlums retreated into the deep forest.
Later, the Rab members rescued six fishermen along with three boats from the spot and recovered four firearms and 55 bullets searching adjoining areas, he said.
Earlier, a team of the Rab battalion recovered two firearms and several bullets from Dudmukhi area of Sharankhola upazila of Bagerhat district on Thursday afternoon after a gunfight with forest robbers.
