Rakhain temple monk hacked in Cox’s Bazar over land dispute

Dhaka – A monk of a Rakhain temple was hacked by a group of miscreants at Maillapar in the district town early Wednesday, UNB news agency reported.

The injured monk of the ethnic community from Arakan of Myanmar was identified as Open Bita,75.
Officer-in-charge (Investigation) of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station Bakhtiar Uddin Chowdhury said a gang of unidentified miscreants stormed the temple around 5:30am and hacked the monk indiscriminately, leaving him injured.

On information, police rushed in and sent the injured monk to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.

Additional police have been deployed in and around the temple to ward off any further trouble, the OC added.

Another report said: The incident occurred near Aggamedha Kyang around 7am , according to Superintendent of Police (SP) Shyamal Kumar Nath and it was over land dispute.The injured is U Pandita Mahather, the 77-year-old principal monk at Uimlahatara Kyang, the temple where the rivals scuffled.
The man being blamed for the assault is also a Buddhist monk, Monyain Rakhain, though he does not work in any monastery, according to local Rakhains.
Monyain lives in the town’s Kyang area. He entered Uimlahatara Kyang and beat the principal priest, said SP Shyamal quoting witnesses.
After he left, a student in the temple called the Kyang committee, who rushed the bloodied monk to the Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.

“The Rakhain people say the attack happened because of a dispute over land.
