A Dhaka court on Wednesday granted more time to the Investigation Officer (IO) of Rana Plaza building collapse in Savar to submit the report.
Dhaka’s Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Kazi Shahidul Islam granted Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Bijay Krishna Kar five more weeks and fixed May 21to file the report after he sought more time on Wednesday. Kar is an official of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).Rana Plaza building which housed five garment factories, collapsed on April 24, 2013. Official figures put the death toll at 1,135, mostly female workers of the garment factories. At least 2,458 people were reportedly rescued from the rubbles of the building.
Two cases were filed over the incident, one about death due to negligence and the other under the Code of Building Construction. The court had earlier sought explanations from the IO over the delay while the IO told the court that the charge sheet would be submitted as soon as possible.
State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal had also reportedly said in April 2014 that the police would complete the investigation ‘very soon’.
A total of 21 people have been arrested over the collapse. Of them, eight have secured bail from the High Court Division of the Supreme Court. The owner of the collapsed building, Sohel Rana has been made accused in both cases. – Court Correspondent
