Relatives on Friday visited Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia in sub-jail in the Old Central Jail of the capital.
The former prime minister landed in jail on Thursday after a makeshift court sentenced her to five-year imprisonment in a graft case.
Four members of Khaleda’s family – her younger brother Shamim Eskander, his wife Kaniz Fatema, and his son Avik Eskander and Khaleda’s sister Selina Islam – entered the jail around 3:30pm.
Witnesses said Khaleda’s relatives stayed inside the jail for some one and a half hours and came out of the jail around 5:00pm.
UNB adds: According to a jail source, Khaledas domestic help Fatema Begum is accompanying her inside the jail.
The source said Ahsan Habib, a physician of the central jail, conducted a physical check-up of Khaleda shortly she landed in jail and found her blood pressure and pulses normal.
The BNP chief has now been kept in a large room which was earlier used as the office of the jail super.
The room has been made neat and clean and upgraded with all facilities like AC, cable TV connection, kitchen, healthy washroom and cosy bed, for a VIP prisoner, said a jail official wishing anonymity.
He said the BNP chief will be kept there for a few days, and she will either be moved to the old jails female ward near the day-care centre, or to a rented house that will be declared a sub-jail by the home ministry.
The Fifth Special Judge’s Court judge Md Akhtaruzzaman handed down the verdict.
