Renovated ‘Amor Ekushey’ unveiled at JU


Savar (Dhaka), April 15 – The Amor Ekushey, a sculpture themed on language movement of 21st Feb at Jahangirnagar University (JU) wore a new look on Sunday.The sculpture, thru renovation works, came to its original shape designed by the Sculptor Chowdhury Jahanara Parvin.
The JU VC Prof Dr. Farzana Islam, as the chief guest, inaugurated the renovation works while Treasurer Prof Sheikh Monzurul Huq and its artist Chowdhury Jahanara Parvin were present as the special guests.
While inaugurating, Dr. Farzana said: “Ekush is the matter of our emotion and pride. We cherish the sense of it”.
The Vice Chancellor, expressing her gratitude to the sculptor, said: “Her contribution is never worth forgetfulness. All the staffs, concerned to the university, will always recall her creation”.
JU treasurer Prof Sheikh Monzurul Huq, at the function, presented the history, backed the building of this sculpture.
The sculpture, at its foot, is laid with a total of six steps of stairs which resemble the six years of different important stages, along with of our six-point, independence and liberation movements.
Sculptor Chowdhury Jahanara Parvin said: “Many women, together with the men, sacrificed their lives in language movement. A woman at the middle of the sculpture commemorates their sacrifices”.
Her upward face symbolizes courage, she added.
Registrar Abu Bakr Siddique conducted thefunction that was attended by JU proctor, teachers’ representatives, faculty members, employees, staffs and students of the university. – JU Correspondent
