Rocket launchers, SMGs found in N’ganj canal


Dhaka – Police have recovered a huge arms from a canal in Narayanganj following information gleaned from a detained drug peddler.The raid that started on Thursday night continued into Friday afternoon in Purbachal residential area in Rupganj.
Divers from the fire service joined the drive early on Friday and recovered 62 submachine guns or SMGs, two rocket launchers, five pistols and some boxes filled with bullets.
Assistant Inspector General of Police Md Moniruzzaman said the arms were hidden in packets under water.
Rupganj police OC Ismail Hossain said law enforcers raided a house owned by Mohammad Sharif, a resident of Daudpur Union on Wednesday. Sharif fled the scene leaving behind one SMG and some contraband Yaba tablets in the house.
Police detained Sharif in Fatullah the next day and extracted information from him about the arms cache hidden in Purbachal.
Three people have been arrested in the overnight raid but police are yet to disclose details on them.
Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque visited the scene and said details would be disclosed later. – Agency
