Samples collected from Gulshan attackers’ bodies for stimulant test

Blood and hair samples have been collected from the bodies of ‘six’ Gulshan attackers to examine whether they took any stimulant or drug before storming the Holey Artisan Bakery on July 1.A team of the Forensic Medicine Department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), led by its Assistant Professor Dr Sohel Mahmud, collected the samples at the Dhaka’s Combined Military Hospital (CMH), where the bodies have been kept, on Wednesday.

Now, these will be sent to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the USA for laboratory test.Five militants — Meer Samih Mobassher, Rohan Ibn Imtiaz, Nibras Islam, Khairul Islam Payel and Shafiqul Islam Uzzal — and their ‘associate’ Md Saiful Islam Choukidar, a chef of the Holey Artisan Bakery of Gulshan, were killed in a commando operation at the restaurant on July 2 following a 12- hour hostage standoff.DMCH sources said the FBI will examine the samples at their laboratory to confirm whether the dead militants took any stimulant or drug before launching the attack.Talking to reporters at the DMCH, Prof Sohel Mahmud said the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) requested them to collect the blood and hair samples for test in the FBI’s laboratory.Earlier, the CTTC unit sought permission from a Dhaka court to collect the samples.
