The Santal people may get back their lands only through the court decision and under due course of law, said deputy commissioner (DC) of Gaibandha district.“The lands of Sahedganj had been acquired paying due compensation in accordance with the law leaving no chance for getting it back. However, it can be altered, only under court order through due course of law,” said Md Abdus Samad, the DC of Gaibandha, while speaking at a joint press conference.
He made the observation amid the increasing demand for giving the Santals their lands back and holding trial of attackers on the lives and property of the plains tribal people.
Police super Ashraful Islam and managing director of Rangpur Sugar Mills Abdul Awal, also spoke on the occasion.
At least three Santals were killed and many others injured during a clash among police, mills workers and Santals on November 6.
The district administration informed reporters that 31 homeless Santal families have been identified in Madarpur and Joypur villages and they would be rehabilitated in four Ashrayon (shelter) Projects on 14.26 acres of land.
Meanwhile, two injured Santals were brought ot Dhaka on Saturday night for better treatment.
Many homeless Santals are still living under open sky with night temperature falling steadily.
In another development, president of Krishak Shramaik Janata League Kader Siddique and president of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal ASM Abdur Rab yesterday visited the affected area and demand the government to rehabilitate the Santals on their ancestral lands in the light of the court ruling.-STAFF REPORTER
