SC order on Khaleda’s bail in another Comilla case Tuesday


Dhaka, June 25 – The Supreme Court on Monday fixed Tuesday for passing an order on a leave-to-appeal filed against a High-court order that granted bail to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia in a case filed under the Special Powers Act over the arson attack in Comilla on Feb 3, 2015.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain fixed the date after completing hearing of the leave-to-appeal petition.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam stood for the state while Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, AJ Mohammad Ali and Joynul Abedin for Khaleda Zia.
On May 28, the High Court granted bail for six months to BNP chief Khaleda Zia in two cases filed in Comilla.
Later, the government filed a petition with the Appellate Division seeking a stay on the bail order.
Eight people were killed and 20 others injured when miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at a bus at Jogmohanpur in Chouddagram of Comilla district during the BNP-led alliance’s movement on February 3, 2015.
Two cases were filed against Khaleda in this connection.
On February 8, Khaleda Zia was sent to jail after a special court sentenced her to five years’ rigorous imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. – UNB
