Dhaka, May 26 – Police foiled an attempt of leftist student organisations to stage demonstrations in front of High Court Mazar Chattar protesting the removal of the statue of Greek goddesses from the Supreme Court premises.Witnesses said leaders and activists of some leftist student bodies, including Chhatra Union, Chhatra Front and Chhatra Federation , under the banner of ‘Pragatishil Chhatra Jote’ brought out a procession from the Dhaka University campus, protesting the removal of the statue, in the morning.
When the protesters reached in front of Supreme Court intersection, police obstructed them, leading to a scuffle.
At one stage, police lobbed tear gas canister and water canon to disperse them, leaving eight people injured.
The injured were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Police also arrested four, including Liton Nandi, general secretary of central committee of Chhatra Union, from the spot.
Earlier on Friday midnight, the statue of the Greek goddesses was removed from the Supreme Court premises.
On April 9, 2017, a writ was filed with the High Court, seeking removal of the statue of the statue from the Supreme Court premises.
Besides, Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh on February 11, this year, demanded removal of the statue of Greek Goddess of Justice from the SC mentioning that there is no such idol in the apex courts of the US and neighbouring India and there cannot be an idol in the Supreme Court of a Muslim majority country like Bangladesh. – UNB
