SC to hear Dhaka North City election Feb 8


Dhaka, Feb 4 – The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court yesterday fixed February 8 for hearing on the leave-to- appeal petition filed by the Election Commission (EC) seeking stay on the High Court order that halted the process for holding the election to Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) for six months.After fixing the date, Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Justice Hasan Foyez Siddique sent the petition to the full bench of the apex court for hearing. He took the decision after a brief hearing on the petition.
The EC on January 31 submitted two separate leave-to-appeal petitions to the apex court against the stay order of the High Court. On Sunday, one of the two petitions was placed before the chamber judge’s court for hearing.
The EC filed two separate leave-to- appeal petitions with the Appellate Division seeking a stay on the High Court order that halted the process for holding DNCC by-election.
Following two separate writ petitions, the High Court on January 17 stayed for six months the process of the DNCC polls that was scheduled to take place on February 26. This court issued two rules asking the concerned authorities of the EC and the government and asking them to explain in four weeks as to why this schedule should not be declared illegal. – Special Correspondent
