Amid growing fear of violence following counter programmes of the two political camps, local administrations have imposed Section 144 in a number of places across the country on Thursday. In Narayangan, the administration slapped restriction on holding any gatherings in a number of places in the district to avert possible untoward incident.
Deputy commissioner Manoj Kanti Boral said the administration has clamped the Section 144 in Kanchpur, Siddhirganj, Madanpur on Dhaka-Chittagong highway of Bandar upazila, Bhulta on Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Rupganj upazila and Signboard on Dhaka-Narayanganj Link Road. He said the restriction will remain in force from Thursday midnight till further notice.
In Satkhira, gatherings in and around Govt Boys’ School ground in the district town have been banned as Awami League and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami called separate programmes at the venue and same time for Friday. Deputy commissioner Dr Anwar Hossain Hawlader said the restriction will remain effective till further notice.
The Section 144 has been slapped in and around Altafunnesa playground of the district town of Bogra as the ruling Awami League and the BNP-led 18-party alliance called separate meetings at the same venue and time for Friday.
Police said the opposition alliance called a meeting at the playground for 3pm Friday. On the other hand, local Awami League convened separate meeting at the same venue and same time. Apprehending trouble, district magistrate Shafiqur Reza Biswas imposed the restriction that will remain in force from 6pm Thursday till 6pm Saturday to maintain law and order.
Additional policemen have been deployed in the area to avoid untoward incident. In Sirajganj, the local administration has imposed the Section 144 in Bazar Station area of the district town for 16 hours from 6am Friday following counter programmes of Awami League and BNP.
The ruling and opposition parties called separate programmes in the area for 3pm Friday. Apprehending trouble, the administration slapped the ban, said deputy commissioner of Sirajganj Billal Hossain. The restriction will remain in force till 10pm Friday. He also said members of Border Guard Bangladesh have been called in to maintain the law and order.
The district administration of Comilla clamped Section 144 in Pubali Chattar and Twonhall areas of the city and Paduar Bazar Biswa Road area for an indefinite period following opposing programmes of Awami League and BNP.
The restriction will be in force from 8pm Thursday till further notice. Meanwhile, four platoons of BGB members were deployed in the city in Chouddagram upazila to maintain the law-and-order situation. In Joypurhat, the local administration slapped restriction on gatherings for 36 hours as the two political parties called separate programmes at Mukta Mancha of the district town for Friday. The restriction will remain in effect from 6pm Thursday to 6am Saturday.
Meanwhile, the local administration has imposed Section 144 in Boda upazila of Panchagarh district as two rival groups of BNP called their programmes at the same venue and time for Friday. The restriction will remain in force for 15 hours from 6:00am to 9:00pm tomorrow (October 25).
Police said that a part of the local BNP led by former MP and Panchagarh district BNP president Mozahar Hossain called a meeting at Dhanhati playground in the upazila for Friday. Juba Dal central vice-president Farhad Hossain Azad also called a meeting at the same venue and time. Later, UNO Mahbubul Haque on Friday morning slapped the ban on all types of gathering at the venue to maintain law and order in the area. – UNB
