Settlers torch 13 houses of hill people after orchard damage

Bangalee settlers on Tuesday torched at least 13 houses and some shops of hill people over damaging a pineapple orchard at Chouddamile in Naniarchar under Rangamati district on Tuesday.
Locals said the Bangalee settlers went berserk in the morning after seeing that their some 4.5 lakh pineapple plants were damaged and 20,000 Segun trees cut off on Monday night by unidentified miscreants.They later set fire to 13 houses and some shops of hill people of the area apparently accusing them of damaging their orchard.
During the attack, traffic on Rangamati-Khagrachhari road was disrupted.
As the tension between the hill people and the settlers heightened, the local administration put the law enforcers on high alert to fend off further trouble.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) M Mustsfa Kamal visited the spot and provided Tk one lakh for the affected families from the district administration. The DC also assured them of further assistance.
Meanwhile, an 11-member probe committee, headed by local Upazila chairman Shaktiman Chakma, was formed to investigate the incident. The committee was asked to submit its report within the next 15 days. – UNB
