Dhaka – Chhatra Shibir activist was killed and another five were injured in a clash with police at Damurhuda in Chuadanga on Thursday.
The victim was identified as Rafiqul Islam, 16, son of Delwar Hossain hailed from Shaha Boalia under Chuadanga Sadar Upazila.
Eyewitnesses said the clash between police and activist of Chhatra Shibir, the associate student organisation of Jamaat-e-Islami ensued
when Shibir activist brought out a procession at 3:30pm at Dakkhin Chandpur and police obstructed them.
Chhatra Shibir staged demonstration in the city and different places in the country on Thursday demanding the release of Shibir president
Delwar Hossain and top leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami, who are facing war crime charges and conviction.
Police fired 15 rounds of bullets to disperse Shibir activists that left Rafiqul Islam dead on the spot and injured at least five persons.
Shibirmen retaliated by throwing brickbats towards police.
Our correspondent reports police cordoned off the area following the incident.
Deputy Commissioner Delwar Hossain and Police Super Abdur Rahim Shah Chowhdury visited the spot.
Police said Shibir activists tried to attack on a puja mandop at Darshana.
Deputy Commissioner Delwar Hossain said the situation is under control of administration and the police have been kept on high alert.
Locals said police took away the body of the Shibir activist to Chuadanga Hospital for autopsy.
In Dhaka, Chhatra Shibir brought out two separate processions at Mohakhali and Kamalapur in the morning.
Police chased Shibir activists and arrested seven processionists.
Witnesses said some Shibir activists came out from a lane adjacent to BRAC University at Mohakhali and brought out a procession chanting
slogan against the International Crimes Tribunal.
They exploded three cocktails and vandalised a number of vehicles.
On information, police rushed to the spot and chased Shibir activists and arrested two Shibir activists.
Shibir activists brought out a separate procession from in front of Khalil Garments at Kamalapur at 9:00am. They threw some cocktails
towards on-duty police and vandalised a number of vehicles.
Later, police chased Shibir activists to disperse them and arrested five people. The arrested people are—Abdullah Md Sifat, 21, Shoyeb
Ahmed, 18, Borhan Uddin, 20, Ilias, 19 and Musfiqur Rahman 22. They were taken to Motijheel police station.
Rafiqul Islam was a first year student in economics department in Chuadanga Government College
Meanwhile, Chhatra Shibir called a daylong hartal in four western districts including Chuadanga protesting the incident. The three other
districts are—Meherpur, Jenaidah and Kustia.
As part of the programme, Chhatra Shibir will observe doa dibosh on Friday and demonstration day on Saturday protesting the incident.

UNB adds: Islami Chhatra Shibir on Thursday called a half-day hartal in four districts of Khulna division for Sunday protesting the killing
of one of its activists in police firing in Chuadanga. Shibir, the associate student body of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, will enforce the
shutdown in Chuadanga, Jhenidah, Meherpur and Kushtia districts from 6am to 2pm. Shibir man Rafiqul Islam, 22, son of Jahidul Islam of
Boali village in Damurhuda upazila, was killed and two others were injured in a clash with policemen at Darshana in Damurhuda upazila of
Chuadanga on Thursday. Witnesses said some local Shibir men brought out a procession at Darshana Railway Bazar around 3 pm as part of
their central programme. When police obstructed the Shibir men, they attacked the law enforcers, triggering a clash. Police opened fire on
the Shibir activists during the clash that left Abdullah dead on the spot and two other Shibir men injured. Meanwhile, Deputy
Commissioner Delwar Hossain and Police Super Abdur Rahim Shah Chowhdury visited the spot. Police Super Abdur Rahim said police
tried to resist the Shibir men while they were vandalising a Puja mandap and the law enforcers fired 15 rounds of bullet as they
attacked them. DC Delwar Hossain said the situation was under control and the police have been kept on high alert. Locals said
police took away the body of the Shibir activist. Later, Shibir announced the hartal protesting the killing of Rafiqul. Assistant
secretary of district Jamaat Ruhul Amin confirmed the shutdown. – UNB
