Local MP Hasibur Rahman on Saturday claimed that Samakal journalist Abdul Hakim Shimul was killed in gunshots fired by Shahjadpur municipality mayor Halimul Haque Miru.
“While discharging his professional duty, journalist Shimul received bullet openly fired by the municipality mayor,” the MP said.
In his brief address before Shimul’s namaz-e-Janaza at Shahjadpur Pilot High School ground, Hasib came up with the allegation against the mayor.
He also demanded a judicial investigation into the incident and transfer of the case to the Speedy Trial Tribunal.
The MP also assured that their party will take appropriate action against mayor Miru.
Speaking at the gathering, ASP of Shahjadpur circle Abul Hasnat said bullet shells were found at Miru’s house and his licensed shot gun was also seized with 43 bullets.
Journalist Shimul was critically injured after being hit by bullets during a ruling Awami League infighting. He later died on the way to a hospital.
He was buried at a graveyard at Madla village in the same upazila around 12:30pm after his second namaj-e-janaza there.
Shimul’s maternal grandmother Rokeya Bewa, 90, who died of shock hours after hearing his death news, was also buried at the same graveyard at the same time.
