A new segment has been added to the upcoming 70th Cannes Film Festival for rising Bangladeshi filmmakers. The segment titled “Dhaka to Cannes” has been facilitated by the Monaco based International Emerging Film Talent Association (IFTA) and Bangladesh based International Film Initiative of Bangladesh (IFIB). Samiya Zaman is among the invited filmmakers. The segment will span a duration of two years in total and run from May 17 to 28 on Cannes premises this year. IFTA will be participating in Cannes for the 11th time. Films supported by this initiative have been featured in Berlin, Toronto and Venice film festivals.

Selected filmmakers of Bangladesh are expected to take part in three international film events alongside established patrons, directors, film critics from various countries. The first one will be the Producers’ Workshop held by Marche Du Film. Then they will take part in the event “Dhaka to Cannes: A Celebration of Talent” on May 19. Their final Cannes participation according to reports published until now will take place on May 21. This time the filmmakers will take part in a segment that is not part of the “Dhaka to Cannes” programme. The Bangladeshi filmmakers accompanied by filmmakers from Mongolia and UK will take part in a segment highlighting the refugee crisis. In 2010 IFTA organised a similar programme with Ethiopian Film Initiative.
