Dhaka – The trend of higher percentage of pass in results of Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent examinations has been broken this year both in pass percentage and Grade Point Average (GPA)-5.This year the pass percentage has declined by 8 percent compared to the last year results. An average of 80.35 percent students under ten education boards has passed this year while it was 88.23 last year. This year the total GPA-5 holders were 1,04,761 and it was 1,09,761 last year dropped by 5,000.
Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid at a press briefing at the Secretariat yesterday defended the fall of the results by saying that such results have been occurred due to the new evaluation method of answer scripts by the ‘model answers’.
In addition, he said that the authorities were vigilant enough so that none can adopt unfair means and such measures may be responsible for declining of the results.
“The teachers have evaluated the answer scripts following the ‘model answers’ supplied to the teachers this year. Such method has been applied after three years of research on it. The previous marking system was faulty but this new method would bring uniformity in marking the answer scripts,” the minister said on the occasion of the announcement of SSC and equivalent results.
The minister also said that the female students are ahead of the boys in pass percentage by 0.85 percent under the ten education boards though the boys are ahead in obtaining GPA-5.
On an average 80.78 percent female students passed this year while the boys were 79.93 percent. A total of 53,488 boys obtained GPA-5 and the girls got 51,273.
Rajshahi board topped among the ten education boards in pass percentage 90.70 percent while pass percentage of Comilla board is the lowest 59.03. But the Dhaka board topped in GPA-5 which is 49,481 and Barisal board is the lowest 2,288. – Staff Reporter
