The BNP on Friday threatened to enforce shutdowns for at least three straight days if the government bars its Dec 26 mass contact campaign aimed at whipping up public support for the call to reinstate the caretaker government.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will lead the programme in the capital.
“The mass contact of Khaleda Zia will be peaceful. She will address street-rallies in five areas in the city on that day,” Standing Committee Member Tariqul Islam told a press brief at the party’s central Naya Paltan Headquarters after a meeting on the Dec 26 programme.
Tariqul said the street rallies would be held in greater Mirpur, Ramna-Tejgaon area, Sutrapur-Kotwali-Jatrabari area, Sabujbagh-Khilgaon area and greater Badda-Gulshan area.
“We would like to inform the government that we will be forced to wage tougher movements if our peaceful programmes are barred,” he added.
Asked about the movements, he explained,” It can be shutdowns for three or four consecutive days.”
The programme will kick off at 11am on Dec 26 from Mirpur, he added.
The meeting was attended by, among others, Standing Committee members A S M Hannan Shah and Rafiqul Islam Mia.
Over Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s recent remarks at a Jessore rally, Tariqul, hailing from Jessore himself, said, “She lied about many things there”
He also dubbed Hasina’s comments over Khaleda’s recent visit to India and Jamaat-e-Islami-BNP alliance a ‘false’.
Defending his party chief, the senior BNP leader said Khaleda had taken up different problems of the country during her visit.
He also said the Awami League was ‘jealous’ about her diplomatic visit to India as ‘it is Awami League’s culture to flatter and kowtow others.’
