Student dies in Ctg Premier University clash


The authorities have closed Premier University in Chittagong for an indefinite period following demonstrations across the port city over the death of a student in a scuffle.Anupam Sen, Vice-Chancellor of the private university, said the decision to close the university was taken after a meeting of the proctorial body on Tuesday.He said the incident was the consequence of a dispute between two groups of MBA students.MBA student Nasim Ahmed Sohel, 23, died after he was knifed in a brawl over arrangements for a function in the afternoon.His fellow students, having vandalised the administrative building of the university, laid siege to Prabartak intersection in the port city.

A Bangladesh Chhatra League group, armed with handmade bombs, also went on the rampage at several key points of the city.VC Sen claimed most of the protesters were from outside the university.Chawkbazar Police Station OC Aziz Ahmed said senior and junior students of the university had engaged in the scuffle over the formation of a committee related to a farewell reception for a batch.Sohel died later at Chittagong Medical College Hospital, an official at the police camp there said.Witnesses said the scuffle took place after senior students beat up a junior student in the afternoon.Severe gridlocks disrupted traffic in the city when the demonstrators blocked streets in front of the university’s main campus at Prabartak intersection, Andarkilla, Cheragi Hill intersection, Agrabad, and Muradpur.A group of BCL activists vandalised cars and detonated two handmade bombs at Cheragi Hill intersection after taking out a procession.The students vandalised several cars and shops at Prabartak intersection.They also brought Sohel’s body to the demonstration later.
