Suspected ‘robber’ killed in Magura ‘gunfight’


Dhaka – An alleged robber was killed in a gunfight with police on Magura-Jhenidah highway in Pashchim Ramnagar area of Sadar upazila of Magura early Monday, UNB news agency reported.The deceased was identified as Shawkat, 38, son of Moyen Uddin, a resident of Komorpur village in Mashukhali upazila of Faridpur district and accused in 10 robbery cases filed with different police stations of the district.
On information that a robber gang was preparing to commit robbery by placing logs on the highway, a team of the law enforcers conducted a drive in the area around 2am, said Azmal Huda, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station.
Sensing the presence of police, the gang opened fire at them, prompting them to retaliate that triggered the gunfight.
The gunfight left Shawkat dead on the spot, added the OC.
Police also recovered one foreign pistol, two rounds of bullets and some sharps weapons from the spot.
