Swift deal urged on EU climate diplomacy day 2015


The Delegation of the European Union and Member States celebrated the EU-Bangladesh Climate Diplomacy Day in Dhaka on June 16th. The day hosted a Multi-stakeholder Climate Dialogue to highlight the importance and benefits of enhancing climate action in all countries and reaching a new international climate deal in Paris later this year. The event was organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Forests and Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF).
At the opening remarks, H.E. Ambassador Pierre Mayaudon said, “2015 is a decisive year for climate negotiations. It is essential to secure a fair, ambitious and legally binding new international climate agreement. Serious risks are associated to climate change, a swift transition to a low carbon future offers numerous opportunities: the sooner we act together, the greater the benefit”.
Mr. Dr. Kamal Uddin Ahmed, Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), attended the event as Chief Guest. Dr Ahmed highlighted the importance of the partnership of the EU Delegation and Member States with the Government of Bangladesh, CSOs and other stakeholders for sustained mitigation and effective adaptation actions in Bangladesh.
M. Asaduzzaman, Professional Fellow, Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) presented a CSO position paper on the international climate negotiations. While A. Atiq Rahman presented preliminary research findings of Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS) study on people’s expectations for Paris Conference. As representatives of the private sector, Mr. Giuseppe Berto (MD, EOS Textile Mills Ltd.) and Mr. Nazrul Islam, MD, Infrastructure Investment Facilitation Company (IIFC) made presentations highlighting the role of energy efficiency in climate change mitigation. The event was chaired by Dr. Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad, Chairman, PKSF.
A Photo Exhibition was unveiled showcasing some of the best joint EU-Bangladesh climate finance projects. An award ceremony was hosted for the winners of a Youth Photo Contest.
The event was attended by several Ambassadors of EU Member States, government officials, diplomatic missions, international organizations as well as representatives from civil society organisations, private sector, research organizations, youth and the media. – EU press release
