Dhaka – Three militants, including alleged Gulshan café attack mastermind Tamim Chowdhury, were killed in a special police operation, ‘Hit Strom’, in a hideout of ‘New JMB’ at a building of Narayanganj sadar upazila in the outskirts of Capital Dhaka on Saturday morning, UNB news agency reported. On a tip off, DMP’s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit unearthed the New JMB’s hideout on the third floor of a three-storey building at Paikpara beside Boro Koborsthan around 6:00am and started the operation, said Sanwar, Additional deputy commissioner of the Bomb Disposal Unit of CTTC.
Police cordoned off the area and evacuated the occupants of the building.
Earlier, DMP had announced a bounty of Tk20 lakh for information leading to the arrest of Tamim Chowdhury, a Bangladeshi-origin Canadian citizen.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said the chapter of Gulshan café attack mastermind Tamim Chowdhury has been closed with his death during a special drive at Paikpara in Narayanganj city.
“We think Tamim and his closest associates were killed here,” he said while talking to reporters after visiting Paikpara in Narayanganj city where three militants, including Tamim Chowdhury, were killed in the special police operation, ‘Hit Strom’, at a militant hideout.
The identities of the two other militants will be disclosed after investigation, said Asaduzzaman.
Noting that the number of militants is so poor and they are isolated from people, the minister asserted that other militants will also be hunted down within a very short time.
Members of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) showed enough patience before killing the militants, as they asked the militants to surrender first, but they did not, he said.
Instead, the minister said, the militants hurled grenades and opened fire on the CTTC men, forcing them to retaliate when the three militants died.
Inspector General of Bangladesh Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque said Gulshan café attack mastermind Tamim Chowdhury had taken cover in the Narayanganj militant den following the Kalyanpur raid where nine militants were killed.
The IPG was talking to reporters after visiting Paikpara in Narayanganj city where three militants, including Tamim Chowdhury, were killed in a special police operation codenamed ‘Hit Strom’.
Acting on information, members of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) conducted the operation, Shahidul said.
The physiognomy of one of the three slain militants is like that of Tamim Chowdhury, he said adding, “This is clear that he is Tamim Chowdhury.”
“Following my order, the CTTC team asked the militants to surrender, but they didn’t. They hurled 4-5 grenades and opened fire at police, forcing the law enforcers to retaliate,” the IGP said.
Earlier, three militants, including Tamim Chowdhury, were killed during a special police operation in a den of ‘New JMB’ in a building of Narayanganj sadar upazila in the morning.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and Police IG Shahidul Haque talked to journalists after the raid.
