The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka on Thursday fixed April 30 as the date for submission of progress report in the execution of arrest warrants against BNP Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman and Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a defamation case filed for making “derogatory” remarks against Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.Magistrate Ataul Haque of the CMM Court fixed the new date as the Officer-in-Charge of Paltan Police Station could not submit the progress report on Thursday, as directed on January 20 to submit the progress report by March 5.
On September 8, last year, AB Siddique lodged the case with the CMM Court while the court ordered the OC to investigate the allegations of the case and submit the inquiry report by October 20 of that year.
The complainant of the case alleged that at a discussion on September 2, 2014, Tarique, who has been staying in London since 2008, claimed Ziaur Rahman as the country’s first President. He also alleged that on September 5 of that year, BNP Acting Secretary General Fakhrul said Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib ended his March 7, 1971 speech saying ‘Joy Pakistan’ and did not make any announcement for the independence of the country.
“Both,Tarique and Fakhrul have distorted the history and tarnished the image of Bangabandhu by making the comments,” the complainant further said in his complaint. – Court Correspondent
