Tarique to lead BNP in Khaleda’s absence

Dhaka, 08 Feb – BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman, now in London in self exile, will discharge the responsibilities as party chairman in the absence of chairperson Khaleda Zia, who has been taken to jail in a graft case yesterday, according to party leaders.Since the senior vice chairman is now abroad, the party secretary general and standing committee members will run the party activities in consultation with Tarique Rahman, said the leaders.
There will be no problem in carrying out the political activities in the absence of Khaleda Zia, the leaders asserted.
The former premier will have to stay in jail for at least three days until Sunday as there was no opportunity for her lawyers to file the appeal against the trial court verdict.
According to the party constitution, senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman will act as the party chairman Tarique Rahman, if the chairperson is unable to perform her responsibilities, said standing committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain.
He said the party secretary general and policymakers would run the party activities in consultation with the vice chairman.
The former minister said that there would be no problem in carrying out the party activities in the absence of the chairperson.
“The party activities will be run in accordance with the party constitution,” he said.
He also mentioned that in the past the party policymaker run the party activities in consultation with each other while the chairperson was in prison for over a month after the 1/11 changeover.
Another standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan echoed Dr Mosharraf saying that the current senior vice chairman would act as the party chief for the time being in the absence of the chairperson.
He sees no problem with maintaining communication with the senior vice chairman living in London what he said in the age of technology.
Nazrul Islam Khan said this while talking to reporters outside courtroom after the BNP chairperson was given five years’ jail time in the verdict of Zia Charitable Trust graft case.
According to the party constitution the senior vice chairman of BNP– Tarique Rhaman will become the acting chair of the party and he will give instruction to run the party, he elaborated.
BNP law affairs secretary and Khaleda’s lawyer Advocate Sanaullah Miah yesterday said that they applied for certificate copy of the court verdict.
“We will file appeal before the High Court against the verdict on Sunday if we get certified copy of the verdict today (Thursday),” he added.
BNP sources however said that bail procedure will be delayed if getting the certified copy of the verdict is delayed. It will depend on the High Court whether it will give Khaleda bail. The court may decide issuance of bail immediately, sources added. – Staff Reporter
