December 3 is a red letter day in the history of Thakurgaon. On December 3 Thakurgaon was liberated from the clutches of the Pakistan occupation Army through a valiant freedom struggle.In the morning of December 3, 1971 a big contingent of freedom fighters and allied forces coming from Tetulia ( Tetulia was a liberated area throughout the Liberation War period) entered Thakurgaon town with a victorious mood. Along with the freedom
fighters and the allied forces thousands of local people entered Thakurgaon town.In one hand the freedom fighters and allied forces after defeating the Pakistan Army and crushing their defenses at Panchagarh, Maidandighi, Boda and Bhulli entered Thakurgaon from the northern side. On the other hand other contingents of freedom fighters coming from Atwari, Ruhea, Akhanagar, Baliadangi and Lahirihat after defeating the foes also entered Thakurgaon from the western side.They all together paraded different roads of Thakurgaon town chanting victorious slogans with jubilant mood. They also hoisted the victory flag at Thakurgaon Chowrasta (the main place of the town).Before that the Pakistan Army retreated from Thakurgaon on the night of December 2 after the fall of their headquarters located at Thakurgaon BGB camp.Senior Journalist of Thakurgaon Abdul Latif, a teacher of Thakurgaon Riverview High School Abdul Gofran and a retired government officer Anwar Hossain told this correspondent that they had witnessed the hoisting of victory flag and jubilant mood of hundreds of freedom fighters and common people who entered first in Thakurgaon town.To observe the day Thakurgaon branch of Udichi Shilpi Goshthi chalked out various programmes including colourful rally, placing of floral
wreaths at the graves of the martyrs, discussion meeting, cultural programmes and fire-works. Former Minister Ramesh Chandra Sen MP is expected to attend the programmes as the chief guest.The programmes will be inaugurated by organizer of the Liberation War former MNA of 1970 election Alhajj Fazlul Karim. -BSS, Thakurgaon
