Ruling Awami League new general secretary Obaidul Quader yesterday hinted that there is no possibility of holding any talks with BNP over the formation of next Election Commission to oversee the next general elections in the country to be held 2019.“Why will we have to sit with BNP? Has BNP kept open the door of talks? They themselves shut the doors of holding dialogue over any issue with the ruling party. If BNP tries to make the next elections controversial again, they will do the same mistake as they did in the past,” he said this while talking to the reporters at the Secretariat in the city.
Quader, also the road, transport and bridges minister said, If BNP wants to participate in the next general elections, it should accept the country’s present constitution that stipulated that the next parliamentary polls will be held under the incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
“We should make the election commission stronger further so that the commission can work independently to hold a free, fair and credible elections in the next time,” the minister added.
Earlier, Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Harsh Vardhan Shringla has paid a courtesy call on new AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader and conveyed his best wishes.
Replying to a question, Obaidul Quader said India does not interfere in the domestic affairs of Bangladesh. The Sheikh Hasina government is committed to hold the next general elections in a free, fair and credible manner and the neighboring country India has no interest to have influence on the elections.
Over the Teesta issue, the minister said he is hopeful that the long-pending Teesta and Feni river water sharing issue will be resolved through the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s upcoming visit to India on December this year.
“As far as I know the Indian government is positive over the Teesta agreement. I hope the existing problematic relations with the West Bengal government will also be resolved in the near future,” he said.
Besides, in another programme, the newly elected AL general secretary termed BNP as the ‘frustrated organization’. BNP has now become a press conference based political party. They have isolated from people for their wrong and destructive politics, he added.
He was talking to the reporters after placing wreath at the graveyard of Begum Fazilatunnessa Mujib, wife of the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman yesterday morning. The new executive committee of Bangladesh Awami League placed the wreath at her Banani graveyard in the city.
Referring to a BNP’s claim that AL has no achievement through its 20th national council session, Quader said BNP never believe in democracy but they talk about democracy which is ridiculous. AL has elected its next leadership in a democratic manner in its 20th council session was held at the Suhrawardi Udyan on October 22-23.-STAFF REPORTER
