Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has identified three major players behind the all-pervasive corruption in the country.

“Politicians, government officials and businessmen are all together involved in corruption,” TIB executive director Dr Iftekharuzzaman told a seminar in the city on Monday.

The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) organised the seminar, titled ‘Political will can only play the key role in combating corruption’, at its auditorium in the afternoon, marking the Prevention of Corruption Week.

Speaking at the seminar, Iftekharuzzaman said only strengthening anti-corruption activities cannot check graft because corrupts escape from court in many ways.

He said a strong social movement has to be waged against corruption across the country to make the nation free from the social menace.

About the Sonali Bank loan scam, the TIB executive director said the government wants to compromise with Hall-Mark Group. “Corruption can’t be prevented in such way.”

Chaired by ACC chairman Ghulam Rahman, the seminar was addressed, among others, by eminent economist Prof Rehman Sobhan, former advisers to caretaker government Dr Hafiz Uddin Ahmed and Rasheda K Chowdhury, former Education Minister Dr Osman Faruk, president of Communist Party of Bangladesh Mujahidul Islam Selim, Advocate Fazle Rabbi Miah, Advocate Rahmat Ullah, MP, Tarana Halim, MP, and chief information commissioner Mohammad Faruk.

Vice Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University Prof Dr Syed Anwar Hossain read out the keynote paper at the seminar. UNB
