Speakers at a meeting have called for saving stressed for thousands of nonsmokers from indirect smoking through ensuring strict enforcement of the amended Tobacco Control Act (TCA) in public places.They put importance on creating public awareness about harms of using smoking and nonsmoking tobacco products and related tobacco-related diseases those have been killing millions of people annually posing a real threat to human civilisation.  Association for Community Development (ACD) and Tobacco Control Coalition (TCC) jointly organised the meeting for preparing annual plan on controlling smoking and using tobacco products at Mir Ismail Hossain Degree College auditorium in Rajarhat upazila town of Kurigram on Wednesday afternoon.With Focal Person of Rajarhat upazila unit of TCC Lecturer Zakir Hossain in the chair, former Headmaster of Rajarhat Pilot High School Abul Kalam Azad attended the meeting as the chief guest.Assistant Professors of Mir Ismail Hossain Degree College Rezaul Karim, Ataur Rahman and Taher Uddin Sarker, its Lecturers Enamul Haque and Mamun Siddique, journalists Rafikul Islam and SM Limon, Teachers
Rasel Kabir and Swapan Kumar Barman addressed among others.  Project coordinator of ACD Ehsanul Amin Emon narrated harmful impacts of using smoking and nonsmoking tobacco products and the poor situation with enforcement of the amended TCA.He said that every sixth adult death is being caused by tobacco in
Bangladesh where 43 percent adults, including 58 percent male and 29 percent female, are consuming cigarettes, bidi, smokeless or other tobacco products.He termed tobacco as the biggest human killer and expressed concern over the fact that seven percent of 13-15 year age group adolescents are being addicted with smoking annually in the country creating a real health hazard for the next generations.He discussed the grievous impacts of tobacco products on human health,economy and environment and said there are at least 4,000 harmful substances in tobacco and 50 of them are responsible for causing various types of cancers.The chief guest put emphasis on more responsibilities of the concerned authorities for stopping violation of the amended TCA and conducting more mobile courts in public places to save the nonsmokers from indirect smoking and thousands of human lives.
