Miscreants have set a train on fire at Dhaka’s Kamalapur Railway Station, the nerve-centre of Bangladesh’s rail network, in the last leg of the two-day strike called by Jamaat-e-Islami.Railways Minister Mazibul Hoque blamed the Jamaat for the act of arson.
Witnesses said the last coach of the Dhaka-bound inter-city Upakul Express suddenly went up in flames around 4:15pm as it reached Kamalapur. They also reported hearing sounds of explosion around the same time.
However, there were no casualties as the passengers were able to get down the burning compartment well in time, witnesses added.
Fire Brigade’s Control Room Officer Nilufar Yasmin said two of their fire-fighting units were already at the station to tame the fire.
The railway employees delinked the burning coach from the rest of the train even as the fire was controlled within 30 to 40 minutes. But witnesses said the coach that caught fire was completely damaged and one linked to it also suffered some damage.
The minister, who rushed to the station, said the fire had caused damage worth Tk 10 million.
Station Manager Khairul Bashir told journalists that the train will leave for Noakhali leaving behind the damaged coaches.
He said it is difficult for the authority to identify if the miscreants had carried out the attack after boarding the train as passengers. (Source: bdnews24.com)
