Two awarded death for war crimes


Dhaka, 10 Jan – Two persons were awarded death sentence and three others given life in prison for crimes against humanity at Rajnagar of Moulvibazar district during the liberation war of 1971.The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) led by its Chairman Md Shahinoor Islam passed the verdict on Wednesday. This is the verdict in the 30th case of ICT and the first verdict in 2018.
The death row convicts are Ozayer Ahmed Chowdhury and Md Nechhar Ali while those sentenced to life imprisonment are Samchhul Hossain Tarafdar alias Ashraf, Yunus Ahmed and Mobarek Mia. Yunus Ahmed and Ozayer Ahmed Chowdhury are in jail custody while the other convicts are on the run.
After hearing the arguments of the accused, the three-member tribunal led by its chairman Md Shahinoor Islam kept the case in the waiting list for delivering the verdict on November 20. Five charges, including killing, mass killing and detention during the liberation war of 1971, were proved against the accused. – Special Correspondent
