Dhaka – A Dhaka court on Sunday remanded Shafat Ahmed, the main accused in the rape of two private university students, for six days on police custody and Sadman Aqif, another accused, in the case for five days after the police produced them before the Metropolitan Magistrate Raihanul Islam.The main accused of rape of two Banani private university students at a four star hotel, Shafat Ahmed with co-accused Sadman Aqif were arrested on Thursday night in Sylhet and brought to Dhaka early yesterday.
The police sought 10-days remand for them and said, initital investigations have found the girls were raped.
A special team from the police headquarters nabbed the two accused from a PathanTula house of a London expatriate in Sylhet city amid pressure from different civic groups, who gave 72- hours for their arrests at a rally on Wednesday at Shahbagh.
Newspaper reports have also been pressing for arrests of the accused, who raped the two students, luring them to the Hotel Rain Tree at Banani to attend a birth day party of Shafat Ahmed, the son of a rich Dhaka city jeweler, Dildar Ahmed.
The police used high- tech tracking technology to nab them although they switched off their phone sets. But tracking Shafats uncles phone revealed their presence, hiding at the Pathantula residence Rashid Manjil of the London expatriate on Thursday after news reports said, they were sighted in Sylhet, sources said.
Though the main accused with his cohort was taken into custody, three others, including Naeem Ashraf, also known as Halim, Abul Kalam Azad,the body guard of Shafat and Billal his driver who were accused to have assisted Shafat and Naeem to rape the students after confining them in two hotel rooms filming the rapes in Video remained at large despite police raids to nab them.
The girls also alleged, Shafat passed on the message through his body guard not to report the incident to police or face the consequence, uploading the video on the social media as well as bragging that he could kill them also.
That kept the victims maintain their silence before mustering enough courage to report it to the Banani police station on May 6 though the incident took place on March 28.
The victims alleged that the Banani Thana police were reluctant to take the case initially and subjected them to harassment. The police filed the case 48-hours after news reports.- Staff Reporter
