UGC pursuing restrictive policy in approving subjects

Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) AK Azad Chowdhury on Saturday said they are following a restrictive policy to approve subjects of arts and humanities in new universities. Observing that subjects like Philosophy, Sanskrit, Pali, Persian and Arabic do not have much marketability in these days, the UGC chair said now they are discouraging the universities to open such subjects.   “We’re seriously considering the practicability, marketability and employability of subjects for the approval of subjects in higher education institutions,” he said.   The UGC is also advocating for a strong industry-university link up to ensure the employability of the subjects to be introduced, he added. – UNB
