US for rapid execution of Annan Commission’s report


Dhaka, Nov 5 (UNB) – The United States has sought rapid and complete implementation of the Annan Commission’s recommendations for the safe and voluntary return of Rohingyas to Myanmar.The US also called on Bangladesh and Myanmar officials to continue developing a framework for the safe and voluntary return of the displaced community to their homeland.
Office of the Spokesperson, US Department of State, said this quoting Under Secretary for Political Affairs Thomas Shannon on Sunday night.
Shannon held the US-Bangladesh Partnership Dialogue with Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque in the city on Sunday.
During the meeting, Under Secretary Shannon thanked the Bangladesh government for its generosity in responding to the refugees fleeing Myanmar’s Rakhine State, and expressed appreciation for its continued efforts to ensure assistance reaches the affected population.
They discussed further strengthening the US-Bangladesh political, economic and energy partnership, counterterrorism cooperation, the nuclear threat from North Korea, and US assistance for Rohingyas in Bangladesh.
The United States recognised Bangladesh’s central role in maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific.
