Vegetables worth of Tk. 60 lakh were sold in the three-day National Vegetable Fair 2018 that concluded in the city on Tuesday.
Senior Secretary of Agriculture Ministry, Mohammad Moinuddin Abdullah, said this while addressing the closing ceremony of the fair as the chief guest.
Terming the third such fair arranged to promote vegetables as a success, he said number of visitors have increased this time comparing to two previous years.
Agriculture Secretary stressed on the development of local vegetables and fruits rather than producing foreign ones.
“The scientists who are in agricultural sector have to do more research on production increase and have to take the results to the farmers’ fields” he said adding that proper use of pesticides has to be ensured through creating awareness among the farmers.
Though the amount of vegetable cultivation in the country at present is not sufficient according to the demand, the Agriculture Ministry is working with all its wings to fill up the gap, he claimed.
Three people were recognized for their contribution in vegetable cultivation in 2017. They are- Nurunnahar Begum from Ishwardi upazila, Md Mizanur Rahman from Shibganj upazila and Nabadwip Mallik from Dumuria upazila.
