Weeklong annual drama festival begins at DU

Dhaka University’s 12th annual drama festival began on December 12. Theatre and performance studies department of the university organised the festival. DU vice-chancellor professor Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated the event while cultural affairs minister Asaduzzaman Noor attended the function as the chief guest. Arts faculty dean professor Abu Md Delwar Hossain and PRO-VC Nasreen Ahmad, among others, were present at the inauguration ceremony, presided over by Ahmedul Kabir, chairman of theatre and performance studies department.Syed Shamsul Haq’s Nil Dongshon was staged at the Teacher-Student Centre of the university. The play, dramatised and directed by Moniruzzaman Ripon, features interrogation of a young man during the Liberation War of 1971, whom Pakistani army captures considering him to be great poet Nazrul.
Seventeen plays will be staged in the festival of which six plays have been written by foreign playwrights. Seven plays written by famous playwrights like Rabindranath Tagore, Kazi Nazrul Islam, Selim Al Deen, Syed Waliullah, Abduallah Al Mamun and Mumtazuddin Ahmed will be staged at the festival. Novels and short stories by Ahmed Sofa, Akhteruzzaman Elias, Rabindranath Tagore and Syed Shamsul Haq have also been dramatised for staging at the festival.
