Why DU Senate graduate representative polls voter list not illegal: HC

0

The High Court on Thursday issued a rule upon the authorities of Dhaka University (DU) asking it to explain as to why DU Senate Registered Graduate Representative polls held outside Dhaka on September 14 and September 21 should not be declared illegal and cancelled.   The court also issued another rule asking the DU authorities to give explanation why the voter list for the election should not be declared illegal.   An HC bench comprising Justice Naima Haider and Justice Zafar Ahmed came up with the rule in response to a writ petition filed by Barrister Belayet Hossain challenging the legality of the polls to pick up 25 representatives to the DU Senate from the registered graduates.   The DU authorities, its Senate and Registrar, have been given 10 days to furnish the court with the reply.   On September 8, Barrister Belayet Hossain filed the writ petition on behalf of DU Senate Election candidates Dr Asaduzzaman Ripon and Jashim Uddin.   Barrister Moudud Ahmed stood for the petitioner while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam represented the state.   When connected, DU Vice-chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique said the DU Senate Registered Graduate Representative election will be held in three centres at DU on Saturday despite the HC rule. “We’ll reply to the rule after getting its copy in hand.” – UNB
