Dhaka, Nov 11 – The High Court yesterday asked the Bangladesh Election Commission (EC) to explain in 10 days why it should not be directed to register the Gono Shonghoti Andolon as a political party. In response to a writ petition, the HC bench comprising Justice Mayeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Justice Md Ashraful Kamal also asked the EC to explain why its decision rejecting the party’s application for registration should not be declared illegal.
Junaid Saki, the coordinator of the Gono Shonghoti Andolon, filed the petition with the HC challenging the EC decision that rejected an application for his party’s registration.
Gono Shonghoti Andolon submitted the application with the EC on December 31 of 2017 for registering the party as a political one.
On April 8, the EC issued a notice to the Gono Shonghoti Andolon saying that the party’s application was not prepared in line with the Representation of People Order (RPO).
Saki, later on, submitted another application to the EC on April 22 this year incorporating the necessary documents and data in the petition in line with the RPO. But, the election commission on June 19 further rejected the application saying that it was not prepared properly, said Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua, counsel for writ petitioner.
After that Junaid Saki filed the writ petition recently with the HC challenging the EC’s June 19 decision. After hearing on the petition, the HC bench yesterday came up with the rule. – Staff Reporter
