The High Court on Tuesday issued a rule upon authorities concerned to explain as to why a lawyer of war crimes convict Salauddin Quader Chowdhury arrested in connection with the leakage of the draft verdict should not be granted bail. An HC bench comprising Justice Md Rezaul Haque and Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore came up with the rule after hearing a petition filed seeking anticipatory bail for Barrister AKM Fakhrul Islam. The district administration of Dhaka and others have been asked to come up with the reply within four weeks. On November 20 last year, plainclothes police arrested Barrister AKM Fakhrul Islam in a case filed in connection with the leakage of the draft verdict on condemned convict war criminal BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury. Detective Branch of police Inspector Fazlur Rahman filed the case with Shahbagh Police Station on October 4. On October 1, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury to death for committing crimes against humanity, including genocide, during the 1971 Liberation War. However, the ICT verdict without containing the judges’ observations and sentences got circulated on different websites before it was pronounced by the tribunal. – UNB
