Migratory birds have started arriving at the lakes of Jahangirnagar University with the advent of winter.
A huge number of enthusiastic bird loving people are thronging the university campus everyday to watch the migratory birds twittering and swimming in the campus lakes.
The JU lakes have taken a blissful look with big and colorful water lilies and different species of migratory birds.
The evergreen campus of Jahanginagar University (JU) resounds with the chirping of thousands of migratory birds who have already taken shelter to pass the winter on the campus.
The JU is known as the lone residential university of Bangladesh that prides itself with a large number of lakes and bushes, providing safe sanctuary for the guest birds.
Every year, in winter season, the migratory birds come far from Siberia and other cold territories seeking refuge in the warmer climate of Bangladesh.
“Migratory birds come to the campus from Siberia, China and Himalayans reign during the period between December and January”, said Professor Sajeda Begum of Zoology Department of the university.
They start to move to other places from their respective countries due to lack of food and intolerable cold, she added. “For the conservation of birds and creating awareness among people, we arrange birds fair every year, this year the birds fair will be held in January, 2018”.
Among others species, the lesser whistling ducks which is known as Choto Sorali and greater whistling ducks is known as Boro Sorali are found more in JU lakes than other species.
Professor Mostafa Feroz, a prominent ornithologist, said “This year the number of migratory birds is comparatively high due to favourable environment on the campus.”
Tamanna, a class II student who came here from Mirpur with her parents said she is very excited to see huge birds at a place.
