Workers’ rights activists demand Ghoroa hotel owner’s punishment


Workers’ rights activists on Sunday demanded that exemplary punishment be meted out to Ariful Islam Sohel, owner of ‘Ghoroa Hotel and Restaurant’ who allegedly shot his employee Riyad to death in the city.Sramik Nirapatta Forum came up with the demand from a human chain formed in front of the Jatiya Press Club.

Riyad was shot to death allegedly by his owner Ariful Islam Sohel at Swamibagh in the city early Wednesday.

Bangladesh Trade Union Kendra general secretary Dr Wazedul Islam Khan, Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies (BILS) joint secretary Zafrul Hasan and Jaitya Garhostho Nari Sramik Union adviser Abul Hossain, among others, spoke on the occasion.

Denouncing the brutal killing of the hotel worker, Dr Wazedul Islam Khan said it can in no way be accepted that workers will invest their labour for their owners and they will get killed in return.

He demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of Ariful Islam Sohel.

Speakers also demanded formulating a new law to ensure security of workers and stop violence against them.

They also urged the government to implement the existing labour law to protect workers from all sorts of repression in their workplaces.
