World’s first 3 + generation nuke unit connects to Russia’s grid in summer

Energizing of First of Its Kind Innovative Generation 3+ Power Unit Scheduled for the summer of the current year. This is the reference project for the Rooppur nuclear power plant in Bangladesh. Two similar units will be set up at Rooppur project.
“Energizing of power unit No. 6 (Novovoronezh NPP-2, Unit-1) of the Novovoronezh NPP is scheduled for this summer”, said Vladimir Povarov, Director of the power plant. Dummy fuel assemblies, which had been loaded into power unit No. 6, are currently being replaced by fuel assemblies with nuclear fuel. As of March 30, 108 out of 163 fuel assemblies were loaded into the reactor.Core fueling into the VVER-1200 has been started as a part of the physical innovative power generation unit No.6 start-up program at the Novovoronezh NPP. The power plant staff has embarked on the works as set forth in the nuclear power plant operation license issued by the Rostechnadzor.
A set of works has preceded the first phase of the physical innovative NPP-2006 power generation unit start-up, specifically, the fuel assembly covers were transported from the fresh fuel storage facility into the reactor building; besides, the equipment was examined and a walk-through test carried out. Afterwards, at 3:28 am on March 24th, the first unit was loaded, with the active phase starting on March 25, 2016.
The Power unit No. 6 of the Novovoronezh NPP is the first unit of a new generation 3+ in the world. NPP with VVER-1200 reactor has been designed by Atomenergoproect (Moscow). This is the next evolutionary modification in the range of VVER designs. The major feature of the innovative power generation unit is the use of extra passive safety systems along with traditional active systems with the former systems operating due to natural processes which significantly decreases impact of the human factor on safety.
The design caters for earthquake, tsunami, hurricane, and aircraft crash protection. Pursuant to the new security standards, the reactor room has a double protective cover; the reactor bulk has a “trap” for active zone fusion underneath it, and the power generation unit is equipped with a passive residual heat removal system. All of those technical improvements raise the nuclear power plant No.6 to a brand new security level. Latest evolutionary modification in the range of VVER designs complies with the safety requirements, environmental and sanitary laws and regulations as well as IAEA and EUR requirements.
As of today, power units with VVER-1200 reactors at various stages of their implementation are at the sites of Leningrad NPP-2 and Novovoronezh NPP-2 as well as NPPs in Belorussia, Turkey, Egypt, Finland, Hungary and Bangladesh.
Rooppur NPP in Bangladesh will have two units with VVER-1200 reactors. Russia’s ASE is implementing the project on turn-key basis as the general contractor. – Truine Group press release
