Writ seeking to stop ads on foreign tv channels

Dhaka – A lawyer on Wednesday filed a writ petition with the High Court Division of the Supreme Court seeking an order to stop telecasting advertisement on foreign television channels running in Bangladesh.Supreme Court advocate Aklas Uddin Bhuiyan filed the petition considering it a public-interest- litigation. The writ petition says that broadcasting advertisement on the foreign TV channels in Bangladesh is prohibited under Cable TV Network Operation Act 2006. Whereas some unscrupulous businessmen are illegally telecasting advertisements through foreign TV channels without any permission of the government.
The petitioner prayed to the court to issue a rule asking the government to explain why telecasting advertisement on foreign television channels in Bangladesh should not be declared illegal. The petitioner made Information Secretary, Senior Commerce Secretary, Chairman of National Board of Revenue, Governor of Bangladesh Bank, Chairman of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, Director General of Bangladesh Television and Inspector General of Police respondents to the rule.
Later, advocat Aklas told newsmen that the High Court is yet to fix any date for hearing the writ petition. Under the Cable TV Network Operation Act 2006, the highest punishment is two years imprisonment or a fine of Taka one lakh for violating the cable network rules. – Special Correspondent
