Yet another fire broke out in Tultala area of the Sundarbans under Chandpai Range in Sharankhola upazila on Wednesday.
This was the 4th fire incident in the world’s largest mangrove forest and a Unesco world heritage site in four weeks. Dhaka, UNB news agency reported.
M Saidul Islam, divisional forest officer of the Sundarbans East Zone, said locals saw smoke billowing out of Tultala area around 5pm and informed them.
Three firefighting units and forest officials with the help of locals brought the fire under control around 7:30pm, he said.
Forest department officials also cut a ‘fire lane’ to stop the spread of the fire, Saidul added.
Assistant forest conservator (Chandpai Range) Belayet Hossain said they managed to bring the fire under control as they cut a fire lane in the area.
DFO Saidul Islam suspected that miscreants set the fire intentionally following cases filed over the recent fire incidents in the area.
