A businessmen was reportedly kidnapped for ransom from Sanarpar in Shiddhirganj area on Thursday night, spreading panic in the city already reeling under abduction spree.
The latest victim was identified as Syed Saiful Islam.
Family sources said Saiful remained missing since 9:00pm on Thursday when he was supposed to return home from his business house.
Later, Hannan, manager of Saiful’s business firm, called the victim’s family from an unknown mobile phone number around 2:00 am on Friday and demanded a ransom of Tk 10 lakh for his release, said officer-in-charge of Shiddhirganj Police Station Abdul Matin.
Later, a general diary was lodged with the police station in this connection.
Meanwhile, locals staged a demonstration on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway at Mouchak around 11:00am where they vented their anger caused by the kidnapping of businessman Saiful barely two days after the recovery of the bodies of seven abducted people, including Naraynganj City Corporation panel mayor Nazrul Islam.
The protesters also put barricades on the highway halting traffic.
Earlier, on Sunday, Nazrul and four of his associates, including Tajul and Nazrul’s driver, were abducted by miscreants from Fatullah. Within hours, senior lawyer at district Judge’s Court Chandan Kumar Sarker and his driver were also abducted on their way to Dhaka.
It is believed that the two separate instances of abduction and subsequent 7 murders are interlinked. Amid the growing panic among the locals due to the frequent incidents of abductions, the government on Thursday deployed 10 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in the city and Siddhirganj area.
Earlier, the government replaced Deputy Commissioner of Narayanganj Manoj Kanti Baral by Deputy Commissioner of Tangail Anisur Rahman Mia in an apparent bid to restore law and order situation in the troubled district. –UNB, Narayanganj
