2 more hartal arson victims die at DMCH

Two more drivers who sustained severe burn injuries when pickets torched their vehicles in Comilla and Gazipur during the countrywide 48-hour hartal enforced by Jamaat on Wednesday died at a city hospital on Monday.   Truck driver Sekandar Bepari, 42, and bus driver Nazrul Islam, 38, succumbed to their injuries at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in the morning.   Earlier, truck driver Samsul Haque Pramanik, 55, of Gandaram Purbopara village in Shajahanpur upazila of Bogra district who suffered serious burn injures on the first day of the shutdown on Wednesday, died at the DMCH burn unit on Sunday.   Hartal supporters torched the truck of Sekandar, son of late Yasin Bepari of Uttar Cabelnagar in Jajira of Shariatpur, in Chouddagram upazila of Comilla district around 9pm on Wednesday, the first day of the nationwide hartal, while he was going to Chittagong from the capital, leaving him seriously injured.   On the other hand, Nazrul, son of Shamsul Haque Bhuiyan of Noakhola village in Chatkhil upazila of Noakhali, sustained burns on 55 percent of his body when the pickets set fire to his bus at Bhogra in Sadar upazila of Gazipur on the second day of the hartal on Thursday.   The two drivers were rushed to the burn unit of DMCH where Nazrul succumbed to his injuries around 6:30am today while Sekandar at about 9:30am.   Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami enforced the hartal demanding the release of its top leaders and protesting the death sentence to its assistant secretary general Quader Mollah. – UNB
