Bumper production of sugarcane expected in RSML zones

A bumper production of sugarcane planted in 2012-13 season is expected at eight sub-zones of Rangpur Sugar Mills Limited (RSML) as the plants
of the sugarcane have grown well on the land.
About 5,500 farmers of sub-zones areas of the mill have cultivated sugarcane on 7,040 acres of land and they are now expecting bumper production.
Zinnat Ali Prodhan, president of sugarcane growers’ association of the mill, said favorable climatic condition, timely supply of high quality seed, fertilizers, insecticides and other agri-inputs and proper disbursement of subsidy and agri loan to the growers are the main reasons behind the expectation of bumper production.Though the mill went to sugar production every year, it was not operated as per expected time for the lack of supply of required quantity of sugarcane from the mill zone areas, causing losses for the mill for years. To run the mill properly and to turn it into a profitable firm in near future, the authorities concerned took many initiatives including high quality seed distribution, subsidy, and loan disbursement on easy
terms for the growers.Besides, the officials and the staff of the mill conducted different motivational and monitoring programmes for the farmers of the mill zones during the plantation season to bring more land under sugarcane farming to attain the cherished goal.According to sources, additionally over 1500 acres of land were brought under cultivation in 2012-13 plantation season compared to the previous season and it has been made possible due to the pragmatic measures taken by the mill authority.Talking to BSS, Managing Director of the RSML Abdul Khaleque said about 1, 25,700 tonnes of yields might be produced and it would have the possibility to operate the mill for 85-90 days crushing 70,000 tonnes of sugarcane during the 2013-2014 sugarcane crushing season. -BSS, Gaibandha
