Dhaka, Feb 02 – BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday claimed that the results of two Dhaka city polls have been declared through media manipulation.“Highest five to seven per cent votes were cast during the elections. They worked to match a ratio to prepare the results for which publication of results have totally been closed after 7:pm. It could be termed as media coup,” he said while speaking at a press conference at party central office.
Expressing the formal reaction of the party, he said Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) has been introduced to influence the election as per the desire of the government and in association with the Election Commission.
“They have controlled the entire system of the election silently. In one word, it was a fabricated election and its result cannot be accepted in any way” he added.
The BNP leader said the voters have lost their confidence on EVM far ago and the have no confidence in holding any election under the present government and the EC.
Asked whether the BNP would join any election under the present government, he said the party believes in changes of power through the election and thus they took part in the polls.
He said they would take their next decision over taking part in the election considering the environment.
Mirza Alamgir said the party observed that hartal protesting holding of what he said a mockery and farcical elections.
He said the fresh demonstration has been announced for Tuesday demanding cancellation of the election results, restoration for democracy and release of Khaleda Zia who is serving a 17-year jail term in two graft cases.
The two BNP mayoral candidates- Tabith Awal for Dhaka North and Engr Ishraque Hossain for Dhaka South, among others, were present at the press conference. – Staff Reporter
